Heat Sink Resistors 

                              

Heat Sink Resistors are typically constructed as resistor elements moulted in aluminium profiles. The purpose of this construction is to transport dissipated heath away when mounted on a heat sink. In this way it is possible to make compact high power resistors and at the same time having low temperature rise on the surface. Danotherm supplies many different heat sinkable resistor types. 

                                                 

Traditional heat sink resistor types consist of wirewound resistor elements moulded in the profile by means of an organic (plastic) insulation material. Other types are thick film resistor elements with direct thermal contact to the profile. Due to the compact construction and the low temperature rise on the surface these resistors are very suitable for compact and close constructions where steady state heat is dissipated.
Voltage dividers or balancing resistors and de-charging resistors for capacitor banks are typical applications.
Due to the small outlines they are less suitable for pulse load applications.

                                          

ALPHA resistors which are dynamic brake resistors mounted in aluminium houses having inorganic insulation materials (SiO2 or Al2O3 powder) are originally designed for natural cooling but when mounted on heat sinks the load ability will be improved and the surface temperature will be lower. these resistors are sutable for impulse load applications. ALPHA resistor types with large mounting surface are the most suitable (i.e. CCH) but all types having a plane mounting area will show higher load abality.

                                  

OHMEGA resistor types which are specially prepared (centreless grinded) can be used as heat sinkable resistors. Typical applications are snubber resistors for HVDC plants. To achieve ful capacity of these resistors they can be cooled by mounting them in grooves or holes in heat sinks constructed for this. Another example of “heat sink” cooled OHMEGA resistors is water cooled OHMEGA resistor constructions
